The name Altrusa is derived from the letters “ALTR” for “altruism” (the unselfish regard for others) and “USA” for United States of America. Altrusa is an international association of professional women and men who volunteer their energies and expertise in projects dedicated to community betterment. Altrusa is also a community service organization that espouses volunteerism, service, and fights for literacy and against AIDS. The Barre Altrusa Club was organized September 27, 1955 and chartered April 24, 1957.
